Station Manager – James Troughton
My name is James and I graduated from the University of Portsmouth, UK with a BSc (Hons) in Marine Environmental Science, during my course I completed an industrial placement year in environmental engineering. Since graduating I have undertaken a variety of conservation projects abroad such as working at an Elephant Sanctuary in Thailand, and on conservation and remediation projects in America across Chicago, Washington DC and New York. I have lived and worked in Australia for a year and travelled the whole circumference in a 4×4 and trekked around Uluru at the centre. My hobbies include anything outdoors, I enjoy hiking, fishing and scuba diving. I have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro whilst raising money for the Meningitis Research Foundation and been on safari. I became scuba qualified in the Red Sea in Egypt. I am passionate about the marine environment and conservation and regularly take part in projects such as beach cleans as part of my individual effort to help preserve our oceans.
I am an advanced open water diver qualified through PADI with ambitions to further my learning to rescue and dive master qualified. My course at university helped me learn about different environments such as terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems as well as renewable energy. I have undertaken field expeditions to Malta, Portugal and various sites across the UK. Since taking over Tobacco Caye Marine Station in January 2019 I am looking to enhance my knowledge in fish identification and coral ecology. My experience from conservation projects has shown me firsthand the impact humans are having on our marine environment and I use this experience and similar projects to help ignite the passion in students to proactively help look after our oceans and marine ecosystems.
